How Wide is the Gap?
There is a great gap between the rich and the poor. Jesus deftly portrays that gap in this parable, contrasting and accentuating the way the world is for the rich and the way it is for the poor. And then, Jesus moves beyond the mere facts of this life into the facts of life after life. The poor man, Lazarus, dies and is carried to the bosom of Father Abraham. He is definitely brought to a better existence in life where he who was vulnerable and had no protection against the harshness of life in this world receives embrace, comfort, and protection in eternity. As for the rich man, he goes immediately to Hades.
