Persevere, My Friends
We wonder if this parable might have been intended to provide encouragement to discouraged believers in the early church. Perhaps they were praying for deliverance from some persecution. Or perhaps they were growing tired of waiting for Jesus’s return? God is not some miserly judge; God will bring justice and deliverance in God’s own good time. This interpretation is certainly justified by the later verses in today’s Gospel lection. Believers should be persistent in their prayers to God for deliverance and vindication. If even a lousy human judge will respond to even a powerless but persistent widow, how much more so will God respond to the prayers of the faithful.
