What Does it Mean for Christ to be King?
The main thing Paul wants us to receive in this passage is a sweeping, cosmic vision of the identity of Christ as Lord of all. Paul is addressing himself to a beleaguered congregation. The beginning verses greet the Colossians with a strong claim that God can provide strength during their present difficulty so they may respond with patience. They must not forget that God has made them heirs with all “God’s holy people” who live “in light”, those who have been “rescued” from the power of darkness, and “transferred” them to the kingdom of God’s beloved Son. Among the benefits they enjoy are forgiveness of sins. All of this is God’s doing.
